Models of Ant Foraging Lines

چکیده
The objective of this problem is to study ant foraging lines in one and two dimensions in order to understand their dynamics and examine the fitness of ant colonies. A simple model to describe ant traffic is formulated using conservation laws and a behavioral model. In this work, the behavioral model assumes that the concentration of pheromones is simply proportional to the density of ants. This leads to a hyperbolic system for the density and velocity of ants. The system is reduced to a system of second order PDEs which is analyzed using Fourier series. The Fourier analysis predicts the existence of phase speeds in the ants’ motion which can be verified experimentally. The group divided into two teams in order to study the one-dimensional and the twodimensional cases separately. The two-dimensional analysis was done numerically using a stochastic model and simulated using cellular automata. This simulation provided qualitative information to study the formation of foraging lines. In particular, this model shows the importance of large populations. Also, additional constraints on the model were considered in order to make it more realistic. For the one-dimensional analysis, the first goal was to find representative Froude numbers for the ants’ movement from the experimental data. The full hyperbolic system was analyzed and its characteristic speeds identified. Numerical solutions of the problem were obtained using both a Lax-Friedrichs and a Lax-Wendroff scheme.

Noise-Induced Adaptive Decision-Making in Ant-Foraging
Ant foraging is a paradigmatic example of self-organized behavior. We give new experimental evidence for previously unobserved short-term adaptiveness in ant foraging and show that current mathematical foraging models cannot predict this behavior. As a true extension, we develop Itô diffusion models that explain the newly discovered behavior qualitatively and quantitatively. The theoretical ana...
متن کاملOptimization, conflict, and nonoverlapping foraging ranges in ants.
An organism's foraging range depends on the behavior of neighbors, the dynamics of resources, and the availability of information. We use a well-studied population of the red harvester ant Pogonomyrmex barbatus to develop and independently parameterize models that include these three factors. The models solve for an allocation of foraging ants in the area around the nest in response to other co...
متن کاملThe Argentine ant persists through unfavorable winters via a mutualism facilitated by a native tree.
Mutualisms and facilitations can fundamentally change the relationship between an organism's realized and fundamental niche. Invasive species may prove particularly suitable models for investigating this relationship as many are dependent on finding new partners for successful establishment. We conducted field-based experiments testing whether a native tree facilitates the successful survival ...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal chemotactic model for ant foraging
In this paper, we present a generic theoretical chemotactic model that accounts for certain emergent behaviors observed in ant foraging. The model does not have many of the constraints and limitations of existing models for ants colony dynamics and takes into account the distinctly different behaviors exhibited in nature by ant foragers in search of food and food ferrying ants. Numerical simula...
متن کاملA continuous model of ant foraging with pheromones and trail formation
We propose and numerically analyze a PDE model of ant foraging behavior. Ant foraging is a prime example of individuals following simple behavioral rules based on local information producing complex, organized and “intelligent” strategies at the population level. One of its main aspects is the widespread use of pheromones, which are chemical compounds laid by the ants used to attract other ants...
